Airbnb’s newest campaign talks about the power of travel and how it can transform our perceptions of the world and our place in it. We asked 15 bloggers to share their own tranformative travel experiences. Gaby Dalkin from What’s Gaby Cooking shares her’s below:

How does travel change you?

Such a question! How do I even begin? Growing up we were fortunate enough to travel to some really extraordinary places, and it’s something I’ve continued to this day. Traveling is a huge part of who I am, and luckily for me, I’ve been able to work it into my profession. Being a food and travel writer has allowed me to experience some unique destinations that I might not have planned for myself. It has certainly changed me as a person and I’m constantly excited for my next adventure to see what it will bring.

Traveling has always been about exploring new cultures and expanding my thinking. It’s eye-opening to explore a new part of the world, experience different cultures and try and see things from other people’s perspectives. Traveling helps me become a worldly thinker. And it’s absolutely made me into a more well-rounded and educated individual.

While it wasn’t always important to me—before culinary school I was the pickiest eater on earth—travel now helps expand my palate. I love tasting new flavors, learning new dishes and bringing some of that flavor home with me. I love feeling like I’m traveling without leaving my kitchen. Having just returned from a Brazilian adventure, there’s really nothing better than whipping up a Brazilian fish stew in my own kitchen and reminiscing about my journey.  I also love to be able to share that culinary experience with my friends and family who couldn’t join me on my world travels.  Another major perk is being able to show my readers what I’m experiencing on a real-time basis with social media.

For me, traveling is something I have to do. The connections I make with people I meet on trips are things I will forever cherish. It’s allowed me to make friendships all over the world, with people who I might have never met. Our paths would never have crossed without traveling, and with our constant access to technology these days, it makes keeping up with those friends easier than ever.
