A weekend getaway to Snowshoe Mountain proves to be the perfect romantic vacation

As the fog settled low into the hills, we turned our lights on as our car slowly snaked around the mountain. There had been few other cars on the route, making a five deer family the only other signs of life on our trip. And that’s just the way we liked it.

Only a few hours earlier we had been in hustle of Pittsburgh, stuck in traffic and annoyed that the only thing on the radio was loud talk radio. Almost immediately after leaving the city, we were transported to a much quieter and peaceful location, to the beautiful rolling hills and endless green mountaintops of West Virginia. After several hours of a low stress drive, we were then deep in the Allegheny Mountain Range, part of the Appalachian Mountain Range.

When we reached the basin at Snowshoe Mountain Resort, we didn’t exactly know what to expect. Since we were arriving after our lodge check-in had closed, we had to get our keys and lift tickets from the main lodge at the bottom of the mountain. Easy enough, we had our keys and tickets within 5 minutes and jumped back into the car to see what the rest of the mountain had to offer.

Allegheny Springs Lodge is the quintessical rustic lodge, cozy and warm, and our one bedroom suite offered the perfect amount of space and privacy, complete with fireplace to set the perfect mood for a romantic weekend. We heated up some hot chocolate and relaxed next to our fire before heading off for the night.

With a close location to all the main Village attractions and The Spa, we were able to really relax, sleep in and take our time getting down to breakfast and the slopes each morning. From this spot we had fantastic access to the slopes right out our back door and a locker room inside the lodge to stow all our skis and equipment. It was such a pleasure to not have to keep our skis and boards in our suite and made going down one last ski run at the end of the day totally doable.

To complete the romantic weekend, we made sure to book both adventure activities and relaxation activities- adding a snowmobile trip to the Backcountry Hut for a sunset dinner and two massages during our stay. My husband loved the speed of the snowmobile trip, something he had never done before and is now totally addicted to! I was very impressed with the Spa, conveniently located at the ground floor of our lodge; it still felt like you were transported to a private island, with the cucumber water and relaxing atmosphere.

We were spoiled with dinner too. Growing up in the South, we were used to Southern Food and are pretty snobby about it. There is nothing I dislike more than when a restaurant claims to have Southern Food and it’s bad. Luckily, the BBQ, the cheese grits and the seafood were all exceptional, satisfying the foodies in us on the trip.

What makes a perfect romantic weekend? If it’s luxury accommodations (complete with fireplace), gorgeous scenery like watching the sunset over the mountains, delicious food, adventurous activities, and total relaxation, than a weekend at Snowshoe Mountain is where you’ve got to go. Now to convince my husband to go back during summer!
